Kindergarten

Circle Time:
(Include in your normal routine every day)
  • Recite the pledge
  • Counting from 1-150 (oral and written).
  • Storytime
  • Learning poems according to holidays and seasons.
 
After completing Kindergarten at MLC, the learner will know:
 
Math:
  • Computation: Writing numbers from 1-150 (Starting in September) then 1-200 as children progress. Counting by 5's and 10's through to 100. Know addition facts whose sums are 10 or less (more as class progress).
  • Addition Facts: Start by counting objects and then work up to math facts (which becomes harder as the class progresses).
  • Subtraction: Start by counting objects and then by numbers.
  • Measurement: Learning to use a ruler (starting in January)
  • Telling Time: Hour and half hours (starting in February)
  • Recognition of Coins
  • Graphs and pictographs(starting in February)
  • Recognition of odd and even numbers
  • Number Patterns
  • Geometry: Identify whole and half patterns. Sort, compare, and order objects. Students should be able to recognize and continue to shape patterns.

Language Development: Reading Readiness
Students will learn and participate in activities to communicate their ideas through the following activities.
  • Poems-Phonics
  • Songs-Music-Dance
  • Stories (students should be able to recall events in the story)
  • Alphabets, Names-(First, Last)
  • Address and phone numbers (recite in class and at home)
  • Phonics Sounds-Individually and in a group. Sounds A-X will be learned before starting the reading process.
  • Word Wall-(posted in the classroom). Consists of sight words(starting in November)
  • Spelling Test: Consists of sight words. Six (6) spelling words will be given on Monday and the test is on Friday of the same week. (starting in November).
  • Reading: (starts in January). Students should be able to answer questions from stories and retell the story in their own words.

Conferences will be held with the teacher and parent on the 1st and 3rd report card schedule. At the end of Kindergarten, students should know:
  • Auditory and visual discrimination of letters
  • Be able to sound out simple words
  • Printing
  • Being able to tie shoes
  • Take jacket/coat on and off using zippers & buttons.
  • Knowledge of color words
  • Know the time by the hour and half hours
  • Money ( identifying coins)
  • Counting to 100 by 1's, 5's, and 10's
  • Understadning Fractions (1/2)
  • Know addition and subtraction
  • Oral language should have a stronger vocabulary and students should use complete sentences.
  • Know the arrangement of extended patterns
  • Improvement in fine motor skills. cutting, pasting, and coloring
  • Social skills (Improvement in cooperation and listening skills).

Pre-Kindergarten

  • Recite and learn (classroom and safety rules).

Included In our everyday schedule:
  • Table Activities
  • Math (counting objects; Eventually simple addition).
 
Tracing and Writing names:
  • The 1st name should be taught first. Then proceed with the last name (depending upon progress with the first name). When writing names make sure the first letter is the only letter that is capitalized. The other letters should stay under the dotted line.
  • Students should stay on letters and numbers for one week (writing racing, recognition).
  • They should be able to recognize and write numbers 1-100 at least; more later).
 
Inside our everyday activities:
  • Phonic sounds: Listening station (sounds, vowels, consonants starting in December).
  • Simple recognition of some words(sounding out).
  • Science Projects: Once a week
  • Art Projects
  • Social Studies: Learning about community people, current events, and happenings.
  • Baking
  • Health-(The 5 senses and body parts).
  • Table Activities
  • Classroom work, reviews, toys, etc.
